When it comes to being in tip-top shape, especially for boxing and kickboxing training, a jump rope is one of the best pieces of equipment you can invest in. With the numerous benefits of jumping rope and the affordable options, it’s no surprise that most fighters use jump ropes to increase their endurance and boost their boxing training.

Here, FightCamp Trainer Jess Evans will outline how to choose the right jump rope, the benefits of jumping rope, and the different types of jump ropes. Jess is a 3-time amateur Muay Thai champion and an avid roper (she has a jump rope in her gym bag at all times). With her tips and top key factors, you’ll be training like a pro boxer!

How To Choose The Right Jump Rope

1. Fitness Goals

Before purchasing a jump rope, ask yourself the following questions:
Are you...

  • Starting to jump rope to lose weight?

  • Trying to build strength?

  • Looking to improve endurance?

  • Trying to master boxing footwork?

2. Rope Length

  • Golden Rule: Measure and cut the rope to your shoulder height

    • Stand on the middle of the rope with one foot

    • Pull up on the handles

      • The handles should come up to shoulder height

  • Some people prefer the jump rope to be a little longer, while others prefer it a little shorter

    • Jess’ Preference: Shoulder-height to avoid rope lagging, tripping, and hitting the toes

3. Durability

  • What material is the jump rope made of?

  • Is it made of cheap materials?

  • Do the handles spin freely?

    • Jess’s Preference: Free rotating handles which help with speedwork and tricks

4. Cost

  • You get what you pay for

  • If you want a quality jump rope that will last, you may need to invest more

4 Benefits of Jumping Rope

The reasons are endless when it comes to adding jumping rope into your boxing routine. Here are Jess’ top four (4) benefits:

1. Increases Stamina and Endurance

  • Use it as a warm-up for your workout

  • Use it as a full-body workout

  • An excellent way to improve conditioning, increase stamina, and build endurance

2. Improves Coordination

  • Challenges your brain to do two things simultaneously

    • Move both hands and feet together

3. Improves Explosiveness and Quickness

  • Serves to help build and improve fast-twitch muscle fibers

  • Helps you move around more freely, in an explosive manner

4. Improves Footwork

  • Go-to training exercise for most fighters

  • Helps you remain active and light on your feet

  • Utilize different patterns (jumps) to mimic ring movements

Different Kinds of Jump Ropes

Here are four (4) of the main types of jump ropes and their features:

1. Weighted Jump Rope

    • Average weighted jump rope: 1-2 lbs.

  • Rope can do damage when hitting toes, not ideal for beginners

  • Price: Typically $15 - $30

2. Speed Jump Rope

Speed Jump Rope
  • Ideal for improving jump rope explosiveness

  • Improves cardio, coordination, footwork

  • Best rope when it comes to mastering double-unders
