Discovering Dance

Jerry Wayne Randolph, Jr. (aka Flo Master) was born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Growing up for Flo was not easy. He didn’t have a father figure, and as a young boy, he was constantly bullied and beaten up. His childhood was difficult, until one day, Flo figured out how he would stop the bullying: he would dance.

The lightbulb moment for Flo occurred when he realized that all of the popular guys in his school were dancers. He thought to himself, “maybe I need to start dancing.” Once he started to learn how to dance, the bullying stopped, and his former bullies started to protect him. Not only was dance proving to be a way for him to stop the bullying, but he soon realized that dancing made him feel alive. He fell in love with it, and more importantly, he fell in love with the way it made other people feel.

The Transformative Power of Dance

B-Boy Flo Master

As time progressed, Flo started to master dance moves, despite never being formally taught, by watching the best dancer in all of Gaithersburg and soon his idol became his dance rival. The next thing he knew, the original b-boy crew from NYC, the Rock Steady Crew, came down to judge a competition that Flo was in. He instantly knew that he needed to be a part of their group, so every other week, Flo would travel up to New York City to battle it out and learn from some of the best dancers in the world. Flo’s hard work and dedication were about to pay off.

Flo and Usher

Usher & Flo Master

After years of learning from the best, pop star Usher invited Flo and his crew to audition for his music video “My Way.” Initially, it was to be a dance-off battle with crews split up, but Flo noticed that everyone kept ganging up on his crew. He decided to take matters into his own hands, jumped sides, and started battling everyone. His tenacious, protective mentality got the attention of Usher, and the rest, as they say, is history. This was a defining moment in Flo’s life. “Usher changed my life.” Their bond has stayed strong since that moment that has carried over from performances to boxing and martial arts training and overall true friendship.

Flo was at the top of his career performing with stars like Ciara, Jennifer Lopez, and Will Smith, and life couldn’t be better, but there was still something that Flo was missing. Sure, he had gotten accolades and acceptance, but he still wanted to learn how to defend himself. Flo took to martial arts and boxing to fix that.

Boxing Begins

Mastering different types of martial arts takes years and years of dedicated practice. One of the best ways to learn is to look at the best. Enter Anderson “The Spider” Silva. One day, Flo got a phone call from one of his boys who told him to get down to the warehouse where they practiced. When he arrived, he found Anderson Silva in the cage. Right before Silva started to spar with his partner, he pushed his sparring partner away, pointed to Flo, and said “I go with him.” As Flo likes to tell it, “that was the best (explicit)-whooping that I ever took in my life.” Once the ‘beating’ was over with, the two were practically family. Everything was finally coming full circle.

Dancing and Boxing To Combat Bullying

Everything came back to bullying for Flo. He always told himself that one day, once he made it big, he would give back. “When I’m at the top, I’m gonna make sure I do what I want people to do to me when I was down at the bottom.” It's because of that mentality that Flo is one of the founding FightCamp Trainers. Now, he has a loving family, friends, and an incredible team around him that inspire those from all walks of life. He is truly able to take his passion for teaching others, and his exuberant energy to millions across the globe through his virtual boxing and martial arts classes, videos, and more.

“I feel that when I change somebody’s life then that's changing my life…what else more can you ask for?” Well said Flo, well said!
