There are memorable moments in our life that help shape who we are today. FightCamp Trainer Aaron Swenson shares his life moment about the first time he got dropped by a body shot, and how that single punch changed his life.

The Rebellious Age

At the age of 18, Aaron Swenson recalls going through an awkward and rebellious stage of his life. He had taken about 6 or 7 years off from martial arts training, and was taking classes at a community college, but failing miserably. He was waiting tables and unsure what he wanted to do with his life. Feeling lost, he was depressed and wasn’t sure what direction to go in.

Aaron remembers that his dad came home one day and said that he had met a kickboxing coach at a bar who seemed like he would be a great coach. He suggested that Aaron go check out his gym, so Aaron decided to give it a shot.

It’s Time To Spar

It was day one at the new gym, and Aaron was there feeling a little cocky. Before he knew it, the coach told Aaron to gear up. The two were about to spar.

The bell rang. Aaron decided that he wanted to show off. He was doing spinning back fists, trying to “take this guy's head off,” as Aaron likes to put it, but before he knew what was happening, the coach dropped him with a straight right hand, right to the solar plexus. That punch not only knocked the wind out of Aaron but it also changed his life.

Humbling Experience and A New Life Path

Some people are fortunate enough to have a positive life-changing event happen that will impact the rest of their lives. Being dropped by that body shot was Aaron’s. It had humbled him, but more importantly, it gave Aaron the insight he needed for his own future. From that day forward, Aaron decided that he wanted to be just like this coach. He recalls that he had “looked up to him so much, he was so cool, he owned his own gym, he was a world champion in kickboxing, and I wanted to be just like him.”
