As a boxing coach and fitness professional, this is the time of year when I get a lot of questions about how to “get healthy” in the new year. People assume that I will hand them a detailed fitness and nutrition program, but proper health is more than just skin deep. The New Year is not the only opportunity to “get healthy.” You can start any time of the year!
Flo Master’s Top 5 Tips To Get Healthy
Here are my top five (5) tips for getting healthy in 2022 or any time of the year:
1. Keep It Simple
Too often, people trying to make changes bite off more than they can chew. They change their diet, quit drinking alcohol, and start a new fitness routine, all in one swoop. Too many changes are hard to maintain, especially all at once. Frustration sets in and all new habits get thrown out the window. Lasting change happens slowly. Focus on making one change at a time. Then, once you feel comfortable with it, layer on the next.
2. Make Sleep a Priority
Fighters take sleep and recovery very seriously. Lack of sleep leads to a foggy mind, bad choices, and a lack of energy. You can’t run a 5K if you are too tired to wake up and train. SLEEP!
3. Drink Water
Like sleep, fighters and other athletes prioritize hydration. A hydrated body sleeps better, trains harder, and thinks faster. Taking in water also helps the body recover more efficiently by flushing out toxins. And, yes, drinking more water can help you shed weight.
4. Surround Yourself With the Right People
Being around negative people can drain your energy and motivation. Spend your time with people who support your growth mindset, desire to be better, and celebrate your successes.
5. Determine Your “Why”
It’s not enough to decide that you want to be healthier in 2022. There’s no motivation there. However, if you can tie a “why” to your goal, you have greater odds of achieving it. Some great reasons people want to get healthy are living pain-free, playing sports with their kids, climbing a mountain in Europe, or living to be 101. If you can come up with a clear reason why you want to get healthy this year and remind yourself of it daily, I promise that you’ll have tremendous success.
Take Action
How about you? Are you surprised that I don’t recommend doing 150 sit-ups every day? Getting healthy is not only what you see on the outside, but how you feel on the inside. Take some time to think about my five tips, write down a plan that works for you, and take action.
I forgot the most important tip! You don’t have to worry if January 1st has already passed. You can start getting healthy any day of the year. I want to know if you take action on any or all of these tips. Join the conversation on FightCamp’s Facebook Community and let me know.
